Greater interest was aroused however by his "Fragments of Ancient Poetry Collected in the Highlands of Scotland and Translated from the Gallic or Erse Language" (), with an introduction by Hugh Blair () in which it was suggested that epic poetry relating to the legendary Fingal and his son Ossian might still remain to be discovered intact in the Highland oral tradition.

    Fragments of ancient poetry, collected in the highlands of Scotland and tr. from the Galic or Erse langrage. James Macpherson was born at Ruthven near Kingussie in Badenoch. In he became a student at King's College, Aberdeen, two years later moving to Marischal College, Aberdeen. He then spent a year in Edinburgh before returning to Badenoch to take up a post as a schoolteacher. In , Macpherson published the English language Fragments of Ancient Poetry collected in the Highlands of Scotland.

As the title indicates, it is a set of fragmentary scenes that do not necessarily relate to each other. There was some remarkable imagery in the poetry, but for me the fragments did not cohere into an enjoyable whole/5.

The last three poems in the collection are fragments which the translator obtained of this epic poem; and though very imperfect, they were judged not unworthy of being inserted. If the whole were recovered, it might serve to throw considerable light upon the Scottish and Irish antiquities.
